This issue concerns itself with “Digging up the Past”, an
attempt to locate and reconstruct the burned home of Wright
Roberts, who lived in West Rutland in the 18th Century.
Written by Prudence Doherty member of the Consulting
Archaeology Program of the University of Vermont, it
discusses in great detail the process of the “dig” beginning
with the potentials of a given area based on records, maps,
atlases and county histories.
Included are soil level tests; recovery of artifacts; and
notations from a map by William Cockburn drawn in 1771.
The article is illustrated with pictures of the digging site
with samples of artifacts including personal and domestic
item.
The issue concludes with a brief article written by Edward
C.Purdy, editor of the Rutland Herald in the mid-19th
Century, It concerns his grandfather, who married the
Robert’s widow. There is a detailed 1854 map of Rutland
indicating the log cabin inhabited by Roberts. It names all
the inhabitants at that time, and their locations in the State.
A wonderful reference for further genealogical research.
